The Royal Residences

The Royal Residences in Piedmont

The Royal Residences of Piedmont, declared part of UNESCO’s World Heritage, represent a system of Palaces and Estates open to visitors, some of which are fully restored while others are undergoing renovation. Since 1997 the Regional Government has invested considerable financial and professional resources in the challenging project to promote the Royal Residences.

The Royal Residences and their characteristics make them invaluable cultural and tourist assets on the international scene. They are a treasure trove of prestigious works of art (paintings, furniture, tapestries, sculptures, and furnishings), unique architectures and settings, historical gardens, vast parks, and suggestive natural and environmental scenarios. They are tightly bound in their architecture and environmental layout to nearby towns and villages and they bear witness to crucial passages in the process of the Italian unification.

The System of the Royal Residences translates in a ring of towns that are the result of the urban policy of the House of Savoy, when Turin was the capital of Italy, in the late 16th century when Carlo Emanuele I of Savoy commissioned the construction of a series of stately homes out of town.

The Royal Residences makes up the so-called “garland of delights”, that was completed in the mid-1800s when Turin, by then reorganised into a new and elegant urban centre, was surrounded by a ring of satellite Savoy Residences that the Sovereigns used to represent the Power of the Crown and that also provided pleasant opportunities for leisure pursuits.

The Ring of Royal Residences, partly coinciding with the historical paths used for the “Royal Hunts”, cuts across Piedmont from North to South and from East to West, for a total of 500 km and more than 100 towns and villages. It is a vast area that is also characterised by additional tourist attractions: areas famous for food and wine; Castles, abbeys and Medieval towns; spring waters and river parks; Roman architecture and archaeological excavations.
