Royal Diadems and Jewellery. The Masterpieces of Italian Goldsmiths for the Savoy Court

FROM JUNE 26, 2009 TO FEBRUARY 14, 2010

The Reggia di Venaria organises an exhibition opening on June 26 on the jewellery crafted for the Court of Savoy since the 19th century by the finest Italian goldsmiths, that will be displayed alongside other masterpieces from the 17th and 18th century that have been preserved intact at the Sanctuary of Oropa.

The exhibition is part of the Reggia’s visiting itinerary and it is included in the admission ticket.

Royal Diadems and Jewellery. The Masterpieces of Italian Goldsmiths for the Savoy Court, curated by Stefano Papi, jewellery expert, and Tomaso Ricardi di Netro, historian and head of the Exhibition Department at Venaria Reale, will be open until January 10, 2010.

La Venaria Reale enters a new phase on its journey to explore the customs, the objects, and the traditions of the Savoy Court.
Next to the Royal jewels are “civilian” jewels that devoted subjects, aristocrats and Royal Family members donated over the centuries to the Madonna of Oropa, the famous Sanctuary on the hills of Biella dominating both physically and spiritually the upper portion of Piedmont. The most ancient items date back to the 17th century, the most modern ones are from the 20th century. Piedmontese goldsmiths crafted these ornaments based on the taste of their time to adorn the statue of the Madonna, where faith and devotion are set in delicate metals and precious stones.

Pomp and magnificence, that convey the prestige of the State and the Dynasty, are evoked by the large state portraits and marble busts of Italian queens and princesses, wearing precious pieces of jewellery, painted by leading Italian portraitists like Giacomo Grosso and Pietro Canonica. The technological ingenuity and creativity of Riccardo Mazza has produced the three “tableaux vivants” with the portraits of Queen Margherita and Maria José of Savoy that sparkle in the light of the special projections on large-size aluminium sheets (150x150), to dazzle the visitors with the captivating beauty of royal diadems, pendants and necklaces.

The jewels are displayed in Garove's four official state halls leading to the Great Gallery, built in the early 18th century, where the Savoy official ceremonies were held.
